Access Keys

Rather than use a mouse, many browsers, e.g. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera and Safari (PCs and Apple Mac), Konquerer (GNU/Linux only), and OmniWeb (Apple Mac only), support website navigation through typing website-defined keys.

The keys, and the instructions for their use, are listed below. This site can be accessed and navigated through them.

Instructions for Use – Windows

When running Windows in…

Firefox 2.x, hold down the ALT and SHIFT keys and then press the Access Key of your choice.

The SHIFT keys are located to the left of the ‘backward slash’ key, and to the right of the ‘forward slash’ key, on your keyboard:

 SHIFT  \  Z  X  C  V  B  N  M  ,  .  /  SHIFT 

 SHIFT  \  Z  X  C

 M  ,  .  /  SHIFT

Firefox 1.x, hold down the ALT key and then press the Access Key of your choice.

Internet Explorer 5+, hold down the ALT key, press the Access Key of your choice, and then press ENTER.

The ENTER key is located to the right of the right-hand bracket key on your keyboard:

 TAB  Q  W  E  R  T  Y  U  I  O  P  [  ]  ENTER

Internet Explorer 4.x, hold down the ALT key and then press the number of the Access Key.

Opera 7+, hold down the SHIFT and ESC keys, let go, and then press the Access Key of your choice. Access Keys are not supported in earlier versions of Opera.

Instructions for Use – Apple Mac

When using an Apple Mac in conjunction with…

Camino, Firefox 1.x & 2.x, OmniWeb 5+ and Safari 1.2, hold down the CTRL key and then press the number of the Access Key.

Internet Explorer 5 & 6, hold down the CTRL key and then press the Access Key of your choice. Access Keys are not supported in Internet Explorer 4.5 for Apple Mac.

Opera 6+, press SHIFT and ESC, and then the Access Key of your choice. Access Keys are not supported in earlier versions of Opera.

Instructions for Use – GNU/Linux

When running a GNU/Linux operating system, e.g. Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, MEPIS, openSUSE, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, etc, in conjunction with…

Firefox 2.x, hold down the ALT and SHIFT keys and then press the Access Key of your choice.

Firefox 1.x, hold down the ALT key and then press the number of the Access Key.

Konquerer, press and release the CTRL key and then press the Access Key of your choice.

Navigating with the Tab Key

All of the aforementioned browsers that support Access keys also allow visitors to navigate through the links with the TAB key only, if this is preferred.

The TAB key is located to the left of the Q key on your keyboard:

Changing Text Size

The size of the text, and in some cases, the graphics too, on the Growing Light website can be changed through the use of your keyboard and browser. The details on how to do this are as follow:

Firefox 1.x & 2.x (running in Windows, Apple Mac, and GNU/Linux)
Hold down CTRL and press ‘+’ to increase the text size.
Hold down CTRL and press ‘-’ to decrease the text size.

Internet Explorer 7 (running in Windows only)
Hold down CTRL and press ‘+’ to increase the text and graphics size.
Hold down CTRL and press ‘-’ to decrease the text and graphics size.

Internet Explorer 5+ (running in Windows only)
To increase the text size only:
1. Hold down ALT and press ‘v’ to open the ‘View’ menu.
2. Select ‘Text Size’ by pressing ‘x’.
3. Use the up and down arrow keys to select your preferred text size and then and press ‘Enter’.

Internet Explorer 5 & 6 (running in Apple Mac only)
1. Open the ‘View’ menu.
2. Use the up and down arrow keys to select ‘Text Zoom’.
3. Use the up and down arrow keys to select your preferred text size.

Konquerer (running in GNU/Linux only)
Hold down CTRL and press ‘+’ to increase the text size.
Hold down CTRL and press ‘-’ to decrease the text size.

Opera 9.x (running in Windows, Apple Mac, and GNU/Linux)
Press ‘+’ on the numberpad to increase the text and graphics size.
Press ‘-’ on the numberpad to decrease the text and graphics size.

Safari (running in Apple Mac only)
Hold down ‘Apple’ and press ‘+’ to increase the text size.
Hold down ‘Apple’ and press ‘-’ to decrease the text size.

Safari 3 beta (running in Windows only)
Hold down CTRL and press ‘+’ to increase the text size.
Hold down CTRL and press ‘-’ to decrease the text size.
